We Reach Out Directly
Whenever possible, we speak with the founder about how the business started, what happened along the way, and what they learned.
The story behind the site
Running a business on your own is hard enough. Finding useful advice from other founders shouldn’t be.

I’ve made my living building businesses for more than eight years. That has included several SaaS products and, for a while, a poster business. I’ve sold a couple and still run others, so I write about many of the same things I work on every day.
I started By Solopreneurs because I wanted to understand how other people actually built and ran businesses on their own. There was plenty of general startup advice, but very little about what the work looked like day to day. So I decided to make the resource I wish I’d had when I was figuring it out for myself.
By Solopreneurs
We want every article on By Solopreneurs to be worth your time. Some begin with a conversation with the founder, where we ask how the business started, what problems they ran into, and which choices shaped the company. Others come from careful research using past interviews, articles, podcasts, and anything else that helps us understand the full story.
Once we have a clear picture, we turn what we found into a story that explains how the business really came together. We’re not interested in repeating the polished version that has already been told. We want to understand what actually happened, including what worked, what didn’t, and what the founder would do differently now. The result should be something we would want to read ourselves.
How We Work
Whenever possible, we speak with the founder about how the business started, what happened along the way, and what they learned.
We read past interviews, look into the tools they used, and check the details needed to understand how the business was built.
We bring everything together in a detailed article that gives other founders something useful to take away.
The Site Itself
By Solopreneurs runs on WordPress using Idea Flow, a theme from SuperbThemes. I chose it because it puts the articles first and doesn’t need a page builder or a lot of extra code. It gave me the clean and beautiful layout I wanted without making the site more complicated than it needed to be.

Design Credit
The look and feel of this site is heavily inspired by a concept created by @mortenpx. The pixel-art world, the warm dark palette, and the overall editorial rhythm all come from his original direction, and full credit for it belongs to him. He takes on client work too, you can hire him on Contra.
Credits
A lot of what you see here was made by other people. This is where the words, the photos, and the pixel art came from.
Many of the photos across the site come from Pexels, where photographers share their work for free. Thanks to everyone who uploads there.
Other photos come from StockSnap, another library of free stock photography.
Some of the images on the site are generated using AI and then edited to fit the look of the rest of the pages. They are not photographs of real people, places, or events.
The knight in the pixel-art scene is based on artwork by Bobddadoo, who makes it available on itch.io.
The orc he runs into on the front page comes from Zerie, also on itch.io.
Some of the interviews and articles on the site are done by Peter Nilsson, a freelance writer you can find on Medium.
